What does "Chilon" mean?
Chilon (pronounced kahy-lawn) of Sparta was one of the so-called Seven Sages of Greece. These men of the 6th century BC were statesman and lawgivers known for their particularly wise contributions to society.
According to The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers by Diogenes Laërtius, Chilon provided many pieces of advice including:
- Be quicker to visit friends in adversity than in prosperity;
- Prefer a loss to an ill-gotten gain; the one will only grieve you once, the other forever;
- Learn how to manage your own house well;
- Do not let your tongue outrun your thought;
- Obey the law; and
- Remain calm.
